CARACTERISTICAS: barqueiro sisudo,
esquálido, que tem no queixo um tufo de cabelos grisalhos, e olhos como globos
em chamas; a capa suja lhe é presa ao ombro por um nó. Sozinho, com uma vara,
ele impele o barco, iça as velas e, em seu ofício tenebroso, transporta os
mortos – está velho, mas a velhice de um deus é intrépida, vigorosa.
HISTORICO: Na mitologia grega, Caronte
é o barqueiro do Hades, que carrega as almas dos recém-mortos sobre as águas
dos rios Estige e Aqueronte, que dividiam o mundo dos vivos do mundo dos
mortos. Uma moeda para pagá-lo pelo trajeto, geralmente um óbolo ou danake,
era por vezes colocado dentro ou sobre a boca dos cadáveres, de acordo com a
tradição funerária da Grécia Antiga. Segundo alguns autores, aqueles que não
tinham condições de pagar a quantia, ou aqueles cujos corpos não haviam sido
enterrados, tinham de vagar pelas margens por cem anos. No mitema da catábase,
